Outlet not working? Check these first

A dead outlet is one of the most common electrical problems, and the fix is often a reset button somewhere else in the house.

1. Look for a tripped GFCI

GFCI outlets have Test and Reset buttons and protect other outlets downstream. One in a bathroom, the garage or outside can cut power to outlets in other rooms. Press Reset on every GFCI you can find.

2. Check the breaker panel

Look for a breaker that sits in the middle position or is off. Push it fully off, then back on.

3. Check for a switched outlet

In many rooms one outlet is controlled by a wall switch. Flip the switches in the room and test again.

4. Signs of a loose connection

An outlet that works only sometimes, feels warm, buzzes, or has browned plastic usually has a loose or burned connection. Stop using it.

When to call an electrician

When resets do not bring it back, when several outlets die at once, or when you see heat, scorch marks or smell burning.

Questions

Why did half my outlets stop working?

Often one GFCI or one breaker feeds them all. If resetting does not help, a loose connection in one outlet can cut power to the ones after it.

Can I replace an outlet myself?

Swapping a like-for-like outlet is a common DIY job, but a mistake can cause a shock or fire. If you are not sure, have an electrician do it.
