How much does EV charger installation cost in Los Angeles?
The cost of a home charger depends mostly on how far the charger is from your panel and whether your panel has room for a new 240V circuit.
Typical price ranges
A simple installation, with the panel close to the garage and no upgrade, typically runs about $500 to $1,500 for the installation. When the panel is far from the parking spot, or needs upgrading, the total can reach $4,000 or more. The charger itself is a separate cost.
What drives the price
Distance from the panel, whether the wire runs through an attic, a wall or trenching outside, hardwired versus plug-in, the permit, and panel capacity.
Do you need a panel upgrade?
Many homes with a 100A or larger panel in good condition can add a charger, sometimes with a smaller charging current or a load-management device. A load calculation answers this.
Rebates
LADWP and other utilities have offered rebates for home chargers. Check your utility's current programs before you buy the charger, since some require specific models.
Questions
Is a 240V outlet or a hardwired charger cheaper?
A 240V outlet can be slightly cheaper and lets you swap chargers, while hardwired units are common outdoors and allow higher charging currents.
How long does installation take?
Most simple installs take a few hours. Permits and inspection add time before and after.
