Why your lights are flickering
Flickering can be as simple as a loose bulb or as serious as a failing connection at the panel. Where it happens tells you a lot.
One light only
Usually the bulb, a loose bulb, or an LED bulb that is not compatible with the dimmer. Try a different bulb, or a dimmer-rated LED.
Lights dim when something starts
Lights that dim briefly when the AC, fridge or a vacuum starts are common. If the dimming is strong or lasts, the circuit may be overloaded or a connection may be loose.
Flickering across several rooms
This can point to a loose connection at the panel, the meter or the service wires. It is worth having checked soon, and LADWP or SCE may need to look at the utility side.
When to call an electrician
When flickering affects several rooms, comes with buzzing or a burning smell, or keeps getting worse.
Questions
Are flickering LED lights dangerous?
Usually not. It is often a dimmer that does not match the bulb. Flickering throughout the house is a different matter and should be checked.
Who fixes problems at the meter?
The utility is responsible for its side of the service. An electrician handles the home's side, and will tell you if the utility needs to be called.
